Description
Description
A barcode scanner is an optical hardware input device that reads printed barcodes and converts them into digital information for a computer. It uses a light source to shine on the barcode, a lens to capture the reflected light from the black bars and white spaces, a sensor to convert this light into electrical signals, and a decoder to translate these signals into digital data. This process allows for the rapid and accurate identification and tracking of products and assets across various industries.
How it Works
- 1. Light Emission:
The scanner emits a beam of light, typically a laser or LED, onto the barcode.
- 2. Light Reflection:
The dark bars of the barcode absorb the light, while the white spaces reflect it.
- 3. Signal Conversion:
A photodetector or light sensor captures the varying amounts of reflected light.
- 4. Digitization:
The captured light patterns are converted into an analog waveform.
- 5. Decoding:
A built-in decoder circuit translates the analog waveform into a binary code (0s and 1s), which is then converted into the specific information contained in the barcode.
- 6. Data Transmission:
This digital data is sent to a connected computer or output device for processing or database comparison.
Key Components
- Light Source: Provides the light needed to illuminate the barcode.
- Lens: Focuses the light and directs the reflected light onto the sensor.
- Light Sensor/Photodetector: Detects the patterns of reflected light and converts them into electrical signals.
- Decoder: Analyses the electrical signals and translates the barcode’s visual pattern into digital data.
Uses
Barcode scanners are essential for:
- Retail Checkout: Speeding up the process at check-out counters.
- Inventory Management: Tracking stock levels and managing inventory.
- Asset Tracking: Monitoring and managing the location of assets within an organization.
- Logistics: Efficiently managing shipments and tracking goods.
